Grommet is a tinny metal or plastic tube of around 2mm wide, they are tiny tubes inserted into eardrums for treatment of conditions which affect the middle ear. Otitis media is an accumulation of fluid in the middle ear which can cause hearing problems. Middle ear contain three tiny bones, which include ossicles-malleus,incurs and tapes, vibrations from sound waves is transmitted from the ear drum to the ossicles which amplifies the sound to the inner ear. When the middle ear is filled up with fluid, the ear structure becomes less mobile and less capable of carrying sound to the inner ear. When this happen you will have trouble hearing, it will be irritating, and pay less attention. Hearing problems can also cause problems with speech and language. How grommet work:- the air that is let inside helps to reduce fluid that builds up, pus will pass through the grommet if a child had an infection. When treating ear infections a doctor will prescribe ear drops rather than antibiotics. Grommets are precaution measures, as time goes a child ventilation tubes matures and starts to work normally, they stay in place for 18 months and they fall out by themselves. Why grommets
The child will need a general sedative and a surgeon makes a slit in the ear drum and insert the grommet, the operation won’t take more than 15 minutes. After which he/she is allowed to go home when awake from sedation. No pain in the ear after grommet insertion, apart from unsettledness, immediately a grommet have been inserted a pus may flow from the ear and it is treated with ear drops. Children with grommets are asked to protect their ears while swimming, showering and bathing, this might increase ear infections and also more discharge. As I had indicated earlier, grommets fall out by themselves, but in some children they still continue to have ear problems, they may need a grommet again. Demerits of grommets
