Metal rings which come in different sizes and colours used to secure holes in textile or leather made to for a belts or ribbon, or for hooks, are called grommets. There are many types of grommets available in the market, depending on the purpose and use on various fabrics. Larger grommets are used on solid fabrics and plastic coatings such as waterproof materials and tent skirts. All tools and materials necessary for a professional and neat attachment of grommet to a fabric can be found in shops with handicrafts or furniture. How to attach grommets to the fabric In order to attach a grommet, you must first drill a hole in the fabric. If you are working with a very stiff material, you can use a special wooden hammer and puncturing pliers. Place the material or object on a solid surface that you had previously protected with a piece of plywood or fibrous material. Hold the piercing tool vertically and hammer it with a wooden hammer to make the hole. There are special tools which have a rotating head with tubular pivots of different diameters. These can be especially helpful if you are using kinds of material that are hard to pierce and if you need to be extra precise. First, select the desired diameter of the puncture punch on the pliers, place it above the material, and squeeze the handles of the pliers to puncture the hole. Then, place the grommet onto the hole so that the head is on the face of the material – on the side that will be visible. Then, lay the material on a solid surface. Place the grommet-mounting tool, a piercer with a round head, above the upper edge of the grommet, and press it firmly until it is secured to the material. What if you don’t have the necessary tools? In case you don’t have special fabric piercing tools, you can use other tools to make a hole in your material. For punching holes in fabrics or plastic materials, you can use a sharp knife or good, precise scissors. After making the hole of a required diameter, use the grommet-mounting device. It consists of the piercing part and the anvil. The grommet consists of two parts: the “eye” and the pad part. Place the “eye” part on the deeper side of the anvil. Pull the tip of the grommet eye through the hole on the face side of the material. Place the pad around the eyelet so that the proximal side is turned upwards. Place the grommet - mounting tool above the upper edge of the grommet eye and press firmly until the edge of the eye is attached to the pad. The most important segments of attaching a grommet to a fabric are using proper tools, being precise and careful not to tear the fabric. Grommets are used both as a useful clothes and fabric accessories and as fashion details on different clothing pieces.
